Functional Endocrinology

Functional Endocrinology is the study of the relationship of the endocrine glands and their hormones, not as it relates to diseases of the endocrine system, but rather as it relates to dysfunction of the endocrine system. In other words, if someone has fasting blood sugar levels that exceed normal lab ranges, a medical doctor will give that patient a diagnosis of Diabetes. But what happens if your sugar levels are not exceeding the laboratory ranges to be considered Diabetes, but they are at a level that cause you to have symptoms and other dysfunction of your endocrine, immune system, or gastrointestinal tract? What if there are a number of lab values found to be just below the lab ranges to be considered diagnostic, but are having an affect on other functions of different glands and organs of the body? This is what is normally going on when an individual goes to the medical doctor with different symptoms and complaints, the doctor then does the medical testing and medical evaluation and then reports to the patient that “there is nothing wrong”. How can there be nothing wrong when the person feels the way that they do? Keep in mind that in the eye of the medical doctor, if there is no “disease”, then there is nothing wrong. Functional endocrinology will educate the patient as to what can be done to overcome their symptoms when traditional medical care has no answer. Functional endocrinology is used as a means to help balance out the individual’s body chemistry allowing for improved function of the body. Dr. Picard is not a medical doctor or an Endocrinologist. He will not give you a medical diagnosis and he will never suggest that you alter your prescribed medications. He does not treat endocrine disorders or any diseases. On occasion he will recommend that you consult with your medical doctor so that they can alter your level of medication if they feel it necessary. Dr. Picard utilizes diet and nutritional supplements to help support healthy glands and organs of the body so that your nerve system receives the necessary fuel for brain and nerve function. People often want to know if they can change their diet and take certain nutritional supplements to improve their health. Functional endocrinology allows the understanding of what tests can be beneficial, how to evaluate those particular tests, and what type of dietary alterations can be used to offer the necessary support to the body to allow for optimal healing to occur.
